One particularly popular destination within the city is the Municipal woods. This large park with purple oaks and red beeches was donated to the citizens of Krefeld by the silk manufacturer William Deuß (1827 - 1911) forrecreation purposes. And indeed, the inhabitants of Krefeld have made extensive use of the 120 hectares of woodland since its opening in 1901. Over the course of time, the citizens have transformed ‚their' Stadtwald in accordance with their preferences. Today, there is a lake which can be used for boating, a playground, hiking trails, as well as numerous grassy areas for sunbathing and shady places that invite visitors to come and relax. The Stadtwald House, with its bandshell and beer garden for 1.700 visitors, represents an attractive meeting point for walkers and cyclists. Three tennis courts, a keep-fit trail and the affiliated racecourse with golf course located inside it round off the sporting leisure activities. The generous donor of the park, which is open all year, is still remembered today by the Deuß temple on the edge of the Stadtwald lake.
